Long time I’m not doing this Random Picking stuff, so hey dey! It is Busker Busker 버스커버스커this time. It’s hard for never hearing about Busker Busker before if you have been following Korean music. They are every where.Well, at least if you have not been living under  a rock named K pop and refused to see outside your “box”.

When there was and is a buzz about a band named Busker Busker, my ears perk up. They have been dominating the music charts in Korea for a while now. They are seriously still at the last time, I check. They did the “all kill” thing that K pop sites and news outlets has touted on those K idol groups every time they release a new album like it is just another day. Busker Busker do this for almost every single song in their 1st full length album but without so many teasers, stills, or MVs have been done. That’s just WoW. Like a Magpie attracted to shiny things, I am, I’m so curious about what’s with all these people talk about. Hmmm…

Busker Busker is a group that consists of 3 members with 장범준Jang Beom-jun at vocal and guitar, Bradley at drum, and  김형태 Kim Hyeong-thae at bass.  Busker Busker formed on 2010, and made their first debut on 2011.  They got famous after becoming the runner up of Superstar K 3 contest, one of many star searching contests being held in South Korea. Superstar K is produced by MNet Media which is under CJ E&M, a big record publishing company in South Korea. As a consequence, Busker Busker has been taken under by CJ E&M since.  Superstar K itself has already been in its fourth season now. I would like to suggest to people who like to say how homogenous South Korean music scene is and how it is dominated by K pop acts, start to give this kind of music show a try to know that like Korean music scene is as diverse as any other well wired countries in the world.

And about their music, it has the retro feeling from 60-70ties rock and roll music, but not so much it is still heavily influenced by pop.  Jang Beom-jun who behind most, if not all, Busker Busker songs’ lyrics and arrangements, said he wants to make his music appealing to a lot of people, women especially. >.> Please don’t kill me, at the first time I heard Busker Busker, my mind lead me to Jang Kiha & The Faces. Perhaps because of the retro feeling, that makes the connection. When I gave Busker Busker more listen, my conclusion went to: “Ah not so much, and Jang Kiha & The Faces has more that rock star and ‘bad-assery’ going on. Jang Kiha Rock! Man, such a great performer J (fanself)”. But if you like Jang Kiha & The Faces’ music, there’s nothing wrong to give Busker Busker a try. It may not be the music I chant during the time I doing my house chores, naah leave that to my K pop meme, but it is good when the time is right and the mood suits. Hah. How can I not love 여수 밤바다  Yeosu Night Sea song?!?

I think one of the things that I like about Busker Busker is Jang Beom-jun’s voice. For me, a good voice from a band vocalist is not a must, it is a plus. Give me engaging great performance, soulful singing, I’m in on the bandwagon. His voice is great, that is definitely above the average for a band vocalist. Well, he said in the interview, he is called “Max-sol” because he can’t sing above sol. Furthermore, he said he has a lower register compared to other Korean men and his range is not very high. But that’s what makes his voice special right? Let those pretty boy idols have the shrill, high octave voice.

And the album, itself. Maybe it is just me. Maybe I’ve just listen too many K pop songs full of auto tune lately. Maybe they just know what Busker Busker is special at. Or maybe it is just something about Jang Beom-jun’s voice :D  In my perception, usually in a song produced by band especially in studio version, the instrument sound crowds the song, so it deludes the band vocalist voice. The vocalist’ voice whether it is good or not, is not the main focus. It is not the center of attention of the listeners. The listeners ‘see’ vocalist’ voice is as integral part of the band’s song. It feels different in some of songs from this album. Without I realize, I give more attention to Jang Beom-jun’s voice than I usually give to a band vocalist' voice. It is like he is there standing in the center of stage to tell a story a.k.a the song with instrument sound at the background to accompany. It is like they ‘tame’ down the instrument sound so that the vocalist’ voice heard clearer. The instrument sound sounds minimalist. I can easily ‘see’ there’s  a three man band, one plays guitar and sings in the center, one plays bass, and one plays drum. Usually it is hard to be done by my un-trained ears with all mixing process in studio. So by taming down the instrument sound doesn’t mean lessen the instruments’ part in song because I can hear the sound of each instrument clearer as the result. Because it builds up certain kind of atmosphere that makes the song felt different. Ah you should try to experience it yourself J  

They admitted that they think themselves as an ‘idol’ band. But then they said they don’t really know the meaning of the word idol and don’t feel the need to draw the line between ‘real singer’ and idol. I was thinking about FT Island and CN Blue reading that statement.  I kinda like their perspective. They have done a number of TV appearances to promote their album, not to forget a TV program named Busker Busker Show.
