What is happening in Indonesia: Shining SHINee

Olla another What’s Happening in Indonesia? Seriously?? There’s another riot because government tried to raise the gasoline price. How many times we must have been through something like this on each every time there’s an issue that gas price being raised up? Maybe it is a hint that we must start to stop our dependency on gasoline for our main energy source. Hah and then we move on to something a little bit fluffy, a little bit bubble gummy, a little bit flashy , which is none other than  a crazy little thing called K Pop. J

Honestly, I never try to group what kind of music I listen, and whatnot. Here I am, ready with open mind and open arm to listen every kind of music that’s offered to me, regardless the genre, the singer, the language, or the country it is coming from. I do have my favorite music but it comes after I actually listen to the music. So shoo all the prejudice. I may dislike certain songs for now, but I can't guarantee I won't like those for now till forever. There’re 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 30 days a month, 356 days a year, and my mood is varied by hours in a day, by days in a week. There will be a time for any kind of music, to cry with, to sing along, to dance like mad, and to soothe the grumpy mood.

So then I never get to understand the sentiment from people who said they have better sense of music than others just because they listen to classic and others listen to pop, or because they listen to indie music and others listen to some generic pop music, or because they listen to music from 40ties till 90ties and others listen to music that comes from huh like right now. Every time I see comment like this, my reaction is like: “Do you? Really? Do you need a help to dismounted from your high horse?” It is because  I can’t help myself but to sing Nat King Cole’s When I’m Falling Love when my mood is perfectly good and sentimental, and I can’t deny my feet that start to move every time I hear SHINee’s Lucifer. Dude, my sense of music ain’t no better from anyone else’s.

And Hallyu wave strikes Indonesia hard, boy and girl groups, the reflection of their counterpart in South Korea, are swarming. They are infecting Indonesia music scene with their catchy electro dance music. There’s a time when “You know me so well, Girl I need you, Girl I want you, Girl I heart you, Cenat-Cenut, Cenat-cenut” was poping up in my head, and then I laughed. Not because it is bad, but I couldn’t control my mind not to sing it, err. Or when I heard 5 years old girls sing “Gak, gak, gakkuat, gak ,gak ,gak, kuat, aku gak kuat sama playboy, playboy; gak, gak, gak, kuat, gak, gak ,gak, kuat, aku gak kuat sama cowok gampangan”, I did facepalm and repeated the lines while imagining myself patting those kids’ back: Sorry for the lack of kid songs in these days.

And the comments drawn from this music are not far from the comments that drawn from western audiences when listen to K pop for the 1st time: “Ewww, they are so gay”,”Yikes, what kind of crappy music is that?”, “Noo, we have enough K dramas already, Indonesia can import anything from SK, but not this!” (Hah) And everyone is entitled each of their own opinion. Because not only the music that they are copying but the style too. The matching cloths, the spike, saggy, colorful haircuts, the guyliner, the pinky-lipbalmed lips. And not to forget the aegeyo, childish act that the girl groups do. The last one never fails to make me cringe either it comes from SK girl group or the Indonesia one. And the one thing that I want to give them applaud is that they are not shying away and boldly saying that they want to be “Indonesia Super Junior” *grin*, or recruit a Korean member as their attempt.

But nothing can convince me about Hallyu invasion more than..... *dugun, dugun, dugun, dugun* pile of books in book store talking about K pop fandom.  Yesshh book, book , and book. I wonder my self. There must be something in the water. At the first time I saw them I could only smirk and well feel a little bit curiosity. It started with book from big group like Super Junior, SNSD (Girl Generation), Big Bang, and Shinee. And then at the last time I checked, there’re books from B2ST and CN Blue fans club as well.  Even the relatively new groups have already had that many fans to make a book? Wow. How many K pop fans in general in Indonesia then? Now, my attention is picked.

For one big group, there’re several different books available. You can take your pick from thick to thin, from newspaper like kind of paper to magazine like kind of paper. You can choose which kind of bonus you want to have along with the book. There’s CD, postcard, pin up, poster, etc. And let me laid it for you that almost all these books are not officially released by each of the groups’ management company. So there’s no back up funding from the artist’s company. It’s pure a form of appreciation from fans to their beloved artists, 100% love.

And move to the dark side, shall we? What the use of these book anyway? That was the first question that hit my mind once I saw for the first time with this kind of book. I get that this book is written from fan to fan. But can you call yourself a fan when you don’t know all stuff that written in there? In this kind of age and time like now, I’m pretty sure  you can find everything that is written in this fan book on internet if you diligent enough and crazy enough. Once again I’ll ask can you call yourself a fan if you aren’t persistent enough looking everything about your bias on any source that available?

Dark fact number two: If someone intents to buy these fan books to support their artist, none of these book profit sale will go to artist pocket. Not that, it is that important. The issue of “slave contract” is haunting our favorite idol life. How the profit from their hard work is not shared fairly between Idols and their company has troubled fans’ mind for the longest time. So many fans’ perspective has shaped up into thinking any support should be given to these idols. So would it be better if the money used for buying these books go to buying digital single these idols have?  It is because official DVD is way more expensive than these books but not more than digital single.

Guided by my high curiosity, in one cozy after noon I took a walk to nearest book store. Random-styled I pick one of the books. And the winner goes to…..

Shinee is back
Shinee is in the house
Give it up for Shinee….

Upon my mounted fiction books on my desk, it is kinda refreshing to read something nonfiction like this book. I always like documentary book. And lately I have a strange fondness of reading article on website, newspaper or magazine. I absolutely have no problems with this kind of book.

On the first half of the book, the book talks about the history of SHINee like on what year they debut, on whatever show and concert they already had appeared, and their debut and comeback singles and albums. And then we get to be introduced to SHINee members’ profile. After, they give away some Fun facts about SHINee members. What are their favorite food, what kind of their ideal type of girl *yawn*, and not to forget the effort to describe each member’s personality outside the “stage”.  These personalities that this book tries to describe and to picture are pretty much what members shows on variety show means just another facet of idol life. I’m pretty sure there’s nothing new in this book if the readers have followed these boys rigorously on variety shows.

This was from a time before they signed with Etude, I guess. That's horrible make up.
Ma boyz look better than this
SHINee is one of few boy groups that I follow near enough but not close enough in term of music. And it is so fantastic, so elastic, they are one out of three boy groups that I can name all of the members *YAY*. So, it is easy to say that I’m not aware of all SHINee facts, fun or not, in this book. But I read and I learned, eh. Here they are, the things that I’ve learned:
 1. Taemin is the prettiest and the most beautiful one among SHINee members. I thought that one place means for Key. Sorry Key I must give the tiara to Taemin. Those cheek bones, that jaw line, those lips, that shyly smile, all those noona can’t resist. Nam dongsaeng nomu yeppeo... *squish*

2.  Stop calling Jonghyun the shortest! XD He’s the bubbliest one. I feel you Jonghyun, we got the same Achilles’ heel.
3. Key has the sharpest tongue and sophisticated fashion sense. I adore him if only for that.
4. Maybe he’s not the most talented member in SHINee, but I’m sure he is the one that has the loveliest and the most rounded eyes in SHINee from where he got all his flames.

5.      Onew slowly becomes my nomero uno bias in SHINee for no obvious reason :D

6.      I know, I know instead of a shawol noona, a shallow noona is more appropriate for me :P
7.      I just knew that these boys got that many accidents during their career in SHINee, that bad enough till pushing back album released date, not attending concert, or even absence on CF shoot. No wonder though, they are such robotronic dancing machine.
8.       I never thought many from SHINee songs are composed and produced by non Korean composer and producer. I thought I listened to Korean pop.
9.       This system with so many single, mini album, full album, and repackage album is so confusing, I lost track on which and when SHINee’s songs were released. And it seems that one song can be found in several albums. Should I give prop to SME?
And the second half of the book, we are coming closer to what K pop fandom looks like from the  inside. It makes me warm inside when I read comments (yeah minus the trolling antis) on one K pop group official Youtube channel, and I can feel how these fans so care toward thier idols, these people whom the fans have never meet in the real life. It is full of love, fluffy like cotton candy. I think this one thing is that makes K pop appealing to me. Behave like a kid and do stupid thing for no one care. Just have fun, and laugh out loud.

But K pop fandom is not always beautiful. The craziness that sesange fans did is heard left and right. These fans take their love to different level. And what used to be stupid and fun becomes crazy and harmful. Many time I think, this obstructive behavior is nurtured from false hood that done by both side, not only the sesange fans who should take the blame but the artist and the artist management company should too. There’s something about the way Korean idol management companies in promoting their idols. They make the relationship between idols and fans looks deeper than that. But there’s no way to rob fans’ money better than that anyway. Cause “Hey He’s my hubby and I’m his wifey”. Cause every song and every album that the idol group puts out is always GOOD, no matter how. And “my oppa is flawless, he can’t do no wrong”. Everyone who says the otherwise is an antis. “Oppa!! Don’t listen to the antis”, said fans.

Absurd comment is absurd comment. When this comment is printed in a book like there’s nothing wrong with it, it makes me want to open these fans’ skull and see what inside. Well book is not Youtube or blog comment section I can say.
“And I start to think when will come a time I can meet them in person, see their face and smile closely, see their hair blown by the wind, watch they are walking, singing, and dancing directly. When will come a time I can shake hand with them and feel their warm and their soft skin under mines. When will come a time I can ask for their signature added with ‘LOVE’ personally. And I’ll protect all of that more than I’ll protect myself.”
Please kids, your self is important, way more important than a piece of paper with a signature from your oppa. Even when your said oppa hit and slap you, you can sue him, not just brush it under the rug by hiding the video.
“Don’t believe anything bad rumor about them (SHINee). Don’t what antis saying. Just believe them. Just believe they always shine forever.”
I’m pretty sure what they refer as an anti is different with what I refer as an anti. There’s such a thing called constructive criticism. This kind of sentiment will hinder the idol growth as an artist. After, fan couldn’t blame anyone when the idols’ material goes weaker and weaker every year.  And at the end, these idols are human, and human makes mistake.
“It is like every time, my friends mocked anything that I did. They said things that should not be said. I tried to be patient and relax. But the patient exists no longer when they said “SHINee is no man”. I answered straight forwardly “You can say I’m crazy or anything, but please don’t say such of thing about SHINee”. That day was mesh up, all my best friends from class X slowly going further away. Only voice and shadow of SHINee is there to be friend with spending the day.”
Aigoo, your friends in real life are as precious, if not more precious, as SHINee. They are the ones who can actually help you when the times get rough.
“How much I’m jealous with people who can see them clearly and closely”
But eh no wonder if this comes from people who said Kim Jonghyun and Shin Sekyung rumored relationship was Bad Thing that can be included as SCANDAL. He’s over twenty. It is normal if he dated a girl or girls perhaps XD
“How I cry happily seeing them put so much care about the environment (earth). How they keep down to earth even though they are already popular. How they always smile and wave to the camera everywhere they go. How I smile heartily seeing them be their self anywhere they go”
Eh?? I don’t know if this fan plays innocent or she/he is just plain ignorance. Their management company told them so. I wonder they would ever survive in the K pop entertainment world if they be the otherwise. And almost all the variety shows they involve in are scripted. SMH

I realize probably the fans who made these comments are hormone-driven teenage girls. But at the same time, this excuse is used by sesange fans, whom we know lot of them are still at teen age, to escape from the laws for invading idol privacy. I just hope as they grow older their views about how relationship between fan and idol is supposed to be change as well. The more I see the issue that way, the more I think the K pop fever is like infatuation, it will go as fast as it comes and hit. And then I come to question: Is that what's the people behind the Hallyu wave agenda want? As we come realize that Hallyu wave is more than K pop and K drama.

All in all, I never get the whole hype about releasing this kind of book. What’s the point? Now the books about K pop groups and their fandom have occupied several racks in the book store. Wow. My suspicious mind told me if it has something to do with the K pop fans’ habit in buying ever thing, I mean EVERY THING about their bias like they are under hypnotist and losing their mind on the process. Eh. And see if the last B2ST concert in Indonesia was the result of that one book about B2ST. So go go go Elf, Shawol, Primadona, Cassie, Wonderful, Bois, VIP, Blackjack! Anyhow I just want to believe it is just some kind of fans’ appreciation toward their idols. 100% love. And whatsnot for love?
