Sure, 늦은아침 Late Morning by Mate is a good song. I don’t even have to understand the lyric to know that. But is it just me who got ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), because I find out it is hard for me to concentrate to the song while watching this MV? First, I got distracted by the English subs. Second, once I can ignore the English subs, and got to watch the video. What’s the video all about? *shrug head* I feel better listening to the song without the MV.
Who is with me that the one that carries the whole MV is the English subs? Without the English subs, the MV tells nothing, it is boring. My mind keeps trying to match the song, that I’ve already known the meaning now, with the MV’s storyline, if there’s one storyline, and it finds nothing. I try to stay tune with the song’s mood, but when I watch the MV, I see my mood, which start to build along with the song’s mood at 1st few minutes, just flies out of the window. Maybe there will be time when I finally can 100% concentrate on the song when the MV runs in front of me, but sorry I don’t have all the time in the world.
I suppose 늦은아침 Late Morning MV is aimed to promote Mate’s movie Play. If the MV shows a clip from Play, I’m not interested watching the movie then. Are there no better scenes from the movie? If not, guys good luck with the movie. If it is intended to make people familiar with Mate personnel, I, who at the beginning to know Mate, can pass Mate personnel on the street, and I still don’t recognize them. If it means for Mate’s music publicity, oh well, believe me the song sounds much better to be listened without the MV. The MV is just distracting.
They make a movie for Mate and give us this crap MV? Why not make simpler MV? Mate jamming in a café or something. I think it is better than see three boys, one tries to read a book, one plays guitar, and one tries singing seriously but then he gets up suddenly to play soccer for awhile and back to take a nap? Since it is a late morning and it is a day without anything special? I’m sure the problem is not about the budget. Maybe the budget is limited, but if they are creative enough, in 3 minutes they can get what they wanted from the MV. Whether it is music publicity, singer publicity, movie publicity, commercial product publicity, they name it, they get it.

장기하와 얼굴들 Jang Kiha and The Faces is hilariously awesome. It looks like somebody has been worked out a Korean trot music and America country music marriage. Or there is something else? :D *curious* Watching their performance makes me feel like I feel when I watch J Rabbit’s performance (though it is just via Youtube (God blessed ye Youtube)). Because of this, I think I need to track back everything that I knew and had not known yet, about Taru. Swear my deduction skill has highly increased after all the hangul.
Can you believe, I started to know Taru because Micky Yuchun, the JYJ boy, made public his current playlist around 1 year ago? His playlist leaded me to one of the artist in How to Fall in Love: When Pastel meets TVCF album. And then it leaded me to Taru, one of the artists in that album with her song Love Today. Since that I have been following Taru, and always interested in every song she put out.
Taru is the vocalist of a trio band, The Melody. The Melody was formed in 2003, and released its 1st full length album in 2007, 1st집 The Melody. This band made some of OSTs for Coffee Prince 1st Shop, K drama airing in the same year with 1st집 The Melody album release. Goodbye, one of the OSTs, is included in 1st집 The Melody album. But you should check the other Coffee Prince 1st Shop OSTs by The Melody, Polly and La, La, La, It's Love. They are good! They give away the light breeze vibe, if you know what I mean J I think partially because of the unique Taru’s voice (or my K drama obsession bias :P )
Talking about Taru’s music, I always had this kind of thought that her music is electric pop. Her singles before 100 Percent Reality album (I have not listened Taru’s 1st full length album yet) always sound fun and cheerful plus with the lyric adding the fun. I just love them. Check Love Today and its lyric. Oh no the song is talking about me? (lol). Her single Bling Blinggives me the inspiration for my blog description : D (Bling, Bling, can you believe? The shine from Tokyo to Seoul …) with a little bit twist. And 예뻐할께 I'll Be Pretty single reminds me my K drama bliss (a sort of).
And another interesting fact is she sings many television commercial film (TV CF) jingles. Bling Bling is for LG Lovely Pink cell phone commercial film. Many people like the song, thus Bling Bling digital single was released. Love Today is for 연꽃씨차 우연, an anti aging tea commercial film starred by Sung Yuri (Romance Town, Hong Gil Dong, Snow Queen). 사랑에 빠진 딸기(sarange ppajin ttalgi) I Love You, Missing Strawberry is for Baskin Robin Ice Cream commercial film, it is just perfectly match because with Taru’s voice the song sounds cutely childish. And not forget The Melody also has several TV CF song under its belt. Its song Remember is a song for Danish yogurt commercial film. In fact the whole album of How to Fall in Love: When Pastel meets TVCF is intended for the artistes under Pastel Music label who ever sing for TV CF. Maximilian Hecker, Sentimental Scenery, Humming Urban Stereo, Yozoh are among the artist in the album. I think some endorsement, one or two, three TV commercials are important for Korean artist, pop or indie. It can double up their income or even bring bigger income than record selling or music performance. So if k pop idols can sell their image and popularity for advertisement, these indi artistes can sell…..their music. Good strategy. How to fall in Love: When Pastel meets TVCF contains 5 CDs, and it is good, you should check that one out too J
Back to Taru, so I was a bit surprised with 100 Percent Reality album. It is “pure” pop and ballad, through and through. No fun electric pop song? I feel like I deconstruct my perception about Taru’s music. It contains 11 songs. 여기서끝내자 (Yeogiseo kkeutnaeja) Let’s End Here, in which she duets with Zitten (짙은) is the title song of the album. I get that it’s title song, but does it have to be 4 version of the song in one album? *rolling eye* It is like the “reprise” version songs from Urban Zakapa latest album. The songs are different but not that much different, and I don’t get the “reprise” meant (Having looked the dictionary and googling too just check if I miss something). And 여기서끝내자 has the original duet version, band version, solo version, and radio edit version. She does another collaboration with Sentimental Scenery in 이슈 Issue. 아이스크림가게, 팬시보이Ice Cream Parlor, Fancy Boy is one I like the most, it is just fun, fun, fun. And my second favorite is the title song, ha, ha, ha in solo version or emm I have to figure the version out yet :P Except 아이스크림가게, 팬시보이Ice Cream Parlor, Fancy Boy, all the songs in the album sound a bit sad to me. Is it 100 Percent Reality title all about? 1 fun, 10 (a bit) sad? We all know how the reality is.

Mate for this time. I encounter with Mate for the 1st time ever via their song Run. And I just got hooked immediately. Run is a high tempo pop rock song that makes me feeling highly spirited. It is included in Play OST album released on May 19, 2011. It also can be found in Transform, Mate’s digital singles, released two month before. Judge from this album, I think Mate has a wide range of music. Listen to track 04 Yeah for another high tempo pop rock song (hmm, its keyboard playing reminds me Coldplay and Keane). And they go for a sweet acoustic song 06 그대 때문이죠Because of You (Love me some acoustic songs, I can’t but fall in love with this song). I giggle every time I listen to 09난 너를 사랑해Adoration for You because all I can imagine is a mellow k drama with the main male lead has been cut loose one-sidedly by his girlfriend (the main female lead) on the name of noble idiocy. Then he is chasing after her while he screams"난너를사랑해”Nan neoreul saranghae!!!” with the tears streaming down his face, bwahahaha. In general, I can say Mate’s music is easy-listening with simple lyrics.
But wait! Are you not curious with Play OST album? Why it is an OST album but all the songs are sung by Mate? Because I am J It is because Mate’s members, all three of them will play as, I can say, them self in movie titled Play (플레이). Lim Heon-il (vocalist & Guitarist), Jung Joon-il (vocalist & Keyboardist), and Lee Hyun-jae (Drummer) are given a role as three young men who are pursuing their dream in music. I can see from where the idea of the movie is coming *grinning*, just look at the movie poster. See the one sits in front of the others, he is Lee Hyun-jae, the youngest of the three, cute heh :D . It is about using human resource to the max, like score Micky Yuchun twice for a chaebol with some Japanese skill role, or cast Philip Lee as a Korean who just comes back from State role for how many time?? Play premiers this month, June 23, 2011.
Not bad huh, a movie, a whole OST album, and a good Facebook page for an indie band. I think their record label has done a great job promoting them. I found out they are pretty popular already in spite of I just know them lately. It is rare a Korean indie artist to have an Facebook page, and more important it is official, not just a fans set up (Funny when I’m on research for another Korean artist Facebook page, one of the biggest Korean artist (idol) fan club E** Facebook page gives a review for its own artist album, I mean Heh?? And the album gets a FIVE star LOLOL). It gives me frustration, when I search for some information about my fave k indie artist, all I can find is sites in Korean (Naver, Daum, Nate, Cyworld, sigh). So setting up a Facebook page is a clever move from Korean record label to reach out the international fan base. Give an A plus for Gem Cultures in setting up Facebook page, for Hallyu Wave in embarking the social media (Youtube, Twitter, Facebook), and for Avex and Japanese artist in general, L not so much.
The movie and the OST album probably will become Mate’s last works before Lim Heon-il, like Kim jae-wook he’s an 83iers means his time for military service is due soon, leaves for military service at least this year. So don’t miss this one out! J

I was not buying that ramen hair in Jung Il-woo, playing the Scheduler in 49 days. I mean it is Jung Il-woo, one of the pretty, pretty boy from K drama la la la land. How can I after I saw this:
That hair just seems so shining and silky made me what to caress my finger through it. So no to ramen hair. Thank K drama gods, he has already got rid the ramen hair now. But it seems the ramen hair still haunts SK like a plague. Not only boys who got infected but girls. If Jung Il-woo could not pull it off, who could? Not even a girl!
Why not choose Go Min-nam's hairstyle in You are Beautiful or Go Eun-chan's hairstyle in Coffee Prince. They are so much better. Though no one will believe she is he, but really I think this Young jee never have any thought to be a real Go Min-nam.

Alex, one from two vocalist of Clazziquai, released his second solo album, Just Like Me, on June 2, 2011. Alex, alone or together with Clazziquai, has sung a lot of K drama OSTs. But my attention to him is highly picked when he played a role in Pasta, as a nice Italian restaurant owner (seriously all roads in Pohonphee’s world leads to K drama la la la land :D ). I really like Clazziquai since they are good in both electric pop and acid jazz, two different music genres. And Alex’s first solo album in 2008, My Vintage Romance is not bad at all. So I really anticipated this album.
But I’ve got to say, after I’ve listened to this album, Just Like Me, several times, I like his first album more. I don’t know, except the track no. 5 되돌릴 수 있다면(Dweidoril suidamyeon) If I Could Bring You back that he sings together with Jane, I find no song in this album really catches my ears :( . Actually I have heard 되돌릴 수 있다면 3 month ago. This song is an OST from one of the Hyun Bin’s latest works before he went to military service on March 2011, Late Autumn (see I always find a way :P ). As much as I love Hyun Bin as an actor, I love 되돌릴 수 있다면 . There was a time when I played this song over and over again, sang along, and cried over it :D (oh yes, I brought my personal bandage that time ^^). Unfortunately, I have not been able to watch this movie :( :(.
Track no. 6 미쳐보려 해도 (Michiboryeo haedo) Can't Be Crazy is chose as title song with a MV following. Jung Ryeo-won (she was playing Hee-jin, second lead female in My Name is Kim Sam Soon), is starring in this MV. The amber scenes through out the MV go along the way with the song theme. JRW looks skinny here (very skinny for some people), but really? Tell me when she doesn’t look skinny by the way. Some people were born skinny, no matter how much food they eat, doncchaknow? I think some bangs for her hairdo will do her good. I don’t know why she keeps sporting this kind of hairdo. Her hairdo in her latest movie, Pain is just eeek, chincha! It made her long face looks even longer.
And I went trough I hard time to pick another song to accompany 되돌릴 수 있다면 as my two favorite songs from this album. Songs in this album, ranged from dance pop to ballad, somehow sound similar to me in part of melody. And because of that I can't say just because it is not my cup of tea. I'm usually sold easily by dance pop or ballad song. If I have to choose two favorite songs from Alex’s second solo album, Just Like Me, then they will be track no. 5 되돌릴 수 있다면 If I Could Bring You Back and track no. 12 평범한 그대 Ordinary You.

평범한 그대 Ordinary You is a kind of song that is felt better after I understand the lyric. One of the reason why I like Alex's 1st solo album My Vintage Romance much because this kind of vibe that I got from 평범한 그대 Ordinary You song, but it is applied on the entire album and without I have to understand the lyrics. I feel the romantic positive love vibe from this song. That's how "love" supposed to be right? :) It makes you think positively about life and world.
Can you imagine how insanely romantic Alex is?(hah! one step closer to delusional fan) Just look at the songs he write. Imagine he sings 평범한 그대 Ordinary You, ok let alone Alex, your boyfriend sings it in front of your door on one bright sunny morning. Me: faint swooning :P

Every time I’m asked by people from out side Korean pop and Korean drama fandom for Korean music recommendation, I will always mention at least one Korean ballad song or group as one of the answer. Even though K ballad song is a part of K pop, which in general can be so generic and full of autotune thus it can put you off after listening to it for awhile, K ballad song can be considerated as refreshment (for you to jump right back to K pop bandwagon the next time you listen Bonamana or Lucifer or Stupid Liar like song :P, seriously they are addicting: Remember how you played them on repeat?)
Not gonna lie, ballad music genre is my cup of tea, but K ballad song is exceptional. I don’t know perhaps there’s a correlation between Korean’s ability to create a heart-wrecking, tearjerker drama (like Autumn in Fairy Tale a.k.a Endless Love, Stairway to Heaven,Winter Sonata, or the saddest ending K drama ever What happen in Bali) with ability to produce this tremendous ballad song. Even without you have to understand the song lyric, you can sense this k ballad song offers nothing but (most of the time) pure sadness of tragic 2 lover’s separation or (sometimes) the happiness of love in bloom. Think your life is lonesome, your jackass boy/girlfriend just dumped you, or your love life gives you only heartache, listen to this song then find your self saying “Hey, I’m not alone” or simply crying your heart out.
And this Korean group consisted of 3 men, 4Men just has released its fourth album, The Artist on June 6, 2011, and 살다가 한번쯤 (Saldaga hanbeonjjeum) Once While Living MV on June 7, 2011. The album is named The Artist because the group personnel’s involvement in the album production. They do not just take part as a singer, but also write some of the song lyrics. It is their full length album after five long years since their last full length album. I had been excited about it ever since the time the teaser was out. I got my 1st chance to know 4men through various K drama’s OST that had already sung by them (talking about doubling the song effect). Actually 4men debuted long before I know them in 1998 with Four members. But then it had been through many personnel changing (I'm confused reading 4men's history). Hence now the group left only with three members, despite its name (understandably, it's K pop!). This group is one of my recommendations, beside V.O.S, Monday Kiz, and Brown Eyed Soul for who are new to K pop, or in their 1st try listening to K ballad song. Because they, not just offer good ballad music, will spoil you with their winsome voices.

Many reasons why people fall in love with a song, it can be because of its melody, its lyric, the voice, the way of singer sing it, etc. If one fails, the other can back it up. And the ballad song lyric can go from the beautiful, romantic, romantic lyric to the cheesy – cheesy ones that easily bore the heck out of you or me. From that non Korean fan like me gains advantage because I can chose whether I want to translate and understand the whole lyrics then put an end to song life, or just listen and enjoy the music and the voices for long time.
Without any mean to lower my respect to who ever had written these song lyrics, I'm not gonna translate these songs :P some songs are better left untranslated.
Few months back Indonesia was shocked by a video posted via, what else, YouTube. This video features one of Indonesia policeman, Briptu Norman Kamaru who lip syncs a song titled Chaiyya Chaiyya. Chaiyya Chaiyya was composed by A. A. Rahman, an India composer, then became popular when Shahrukh Kahn sang it in one of his movie, Dil Se. The 1st time I saw this video was at news program which in it a discussion about whether or not Briptu Norman should be punished because what he did in the video was held. Well, I, as a commoner, preferred him not to be punished unless there’s a rule that states policeman is not allowed to sing (ups no lip sync) jokingly while he/she is on duty. Of course I was laughing out loud that time. Check the video:
Wait, Briptu Norman is not the only one. Not long before him, in early 2010, a video that is similar with Briptu Norman’s video circulated on YouTube. Sinta and Jojo were the ones behind the video. They also lip synced an Indonesia dangdut song titled Keong Racun. Swear, the reason why this video was so popular that time, I never understand until now. At least, Briptu Norman’s video is funny, this video is just about 2 girls do a lip sync, you have never seen something like this before?? I bet you do.
But oh Indonesia, both Briptu Norman and Sinta & Jojo were so popular, they successfully scored a record single contract. Sinta & Jojo also managed to have a CF under their names. This sudden popularity brought them opportunities to appear in various entertainment and variety shows. If you still have a hard time to figure out how famous Briptu Norman was just imagine someone who could cause a quarrel between some music producers. Those music producers were fighting on the right to sign a contract in which Briptu Norman would release his 1st (an only) record single. Briptu Norman finally signed a contract with one of music producer and released a record single. Alas, the other producers were not happy with it, and one of them said that Briptu Norman’s new song had a plagiarism issue. Excuse me, is it just me who think the whole things seem ridiculous and what the heck that fighting for?
Did he create his own music so he deserves a record single contract? No
Did he sing a song really?? As Iong as I remember all he did was LIP SYNC
Perhaps he played one music instrument in his famous YouTube video? No, hell no, so a record single contract?? You kid me, do you?
And dude, watching you constantly in and out all those entertainment and variety shows for freaking 3 months doing the same lip sync (or singing decently) all over again, irritated me, sorry. Other people out side Indonesia were arguing if the popularity gained by Justin Beiber and Rebecca Black via YouTube sized up their musical abilities, we were in Indonesia going crazy about Briptu Norman, Sinta & Jojo. I tell you at least Beiber and Black actually SINGS not just lip sync song, just so you know.
Thank God, it is over now (I don’t say it won’t happen again :P). Briptu Norman is sent to his original duty station , so no more stage performance, no more television show for him apparently (Eat that PD-nim! For your stupid quarrel, tsk, tsk, tsk). And lets celebrate this with another YouTube artists (woops I won’t call Briptu Norman & co artist ;P ). Lets sing!

Oh no is it not a happy song? Wee it is J Rabbit. They make The Little Mermaid sounds like not a desperate unrequited love story (check their Part of Your World (Little Mermaid OST) cover song), so what about this Morejo song? It is just a song about a girl with her unrequited crush. Who does never experience that? I can feel the frustration, he, he, he from the lyric not the music :D
