피기돌스 (Piggy Dolls) - 아는여자 (This Girl I Know) [lyric, romanization, translation]

When I read “Piggy Dolls Lose Some Weight for Their Come Back Album”, the 1^st thing that came across my mind is “So? They are just like anybody else in the industry, no?” Where did their debut concept go? The concept about a girl group that doesn’t look stick-thin came to break the stereotype because they (wow) have talent was about every where, every time, Piggy Dolls was around. Talent is all that matter, not look (Thanks God). Oh really dude?

Hurl. They tried too hard with their concept, it drove me a bit sarcastic: Here come the hypocrisy. Yes, they are talented, but wait! They are not just talented but also not stick-thin. No, I should write: They are not stick-thin and they are talented. How they look like should be put at first. Look all the effort to make these girls bigger than they really are. All those wardrobes are fugly, it is a crime, eeepp!  Poor girls. I mean even people with size bigger than the average can look amazing, if they dress right. Did they even realize by emphasizing they are NOT thin, means look DOES matter? The only thing that makes them different from the rest was when the others sell their slim-body-ant-waist-honey-thigh-long-slender-legs figure, Piggy Dolls sell everything-that-the-others-have-not figure.

And then their album went flop. So in rush, they changed their concept. Girl, I’m-happy-with-my-full-figure concept didn’t work, you’ve gotta slim down for your next album. News about Piggy Dolls lose weight was out. But I could not careless. Since news about idols has slimmed down is just another day in K pop world. And news about idols confessing or denying they got plastic surgery is heard like everyday.

You know what I care? Their new song, 아는여자 This Girl I Know. That song is catchy. I keep replaying it on my playlist. So do my friends. I think it is way better than their debut single, Trend, that is all about image conscious. Perhaps thing that many people, including me, want is just a silly, easy-to-connect song. A song tells about every day girl’s life. Song that can be hummed when we do the laundry, clean the house, or drive car to work. And just having good talent, like powerful, amazing voice, is not enough. Some of my friend do have good voice but they don’t become singer, why is that? And why there are plenty of singers with good voice, but some of them are succeed, some are just not? It is because it needs more than good talent, i.e. good vocal. Perhaps at the end, without having to emphasize it, it is not about their look that matter. It is the song, the music.

This comes from Rumble Fish’s vocalist going solo 최진이Choe Jin-ee's latest single 사랑해요 사랑해요 I Love You I Love You. The song is pretty passable to me. It is just another ballad love song with the cheese on top of it. The only thing that keeps me replaying the song is I need to listen to the song while I’m translating it (yet still it doesn't grow on me). And that because this MV reminds me of classic Korean movie Il Mare. It is my first Korean movie. I watched it around 2007. The movie itself is a 2000 production.

The thing about Il Mare is it is just so good, it remains. It is not the thing you watch then you forget. Il mare is just beautiful, the story line, the scene, the script. It represents everything that I love from non-Hollywood movie, the simplicities. With minimum sound effect, the movie seems quite and being shot in silence. But yet from the silence and its quietness, the depth is showed.

The movie involves two people, one house, and one magical mail box (yes dear back in the year 2000, when there’s magical mailbox (wow), we got yahoo et al now and wish there’s magical yahoo inbox bringing our true love right in front of us).  Il Mare is a movie about a journey of two people who discover each other and then fall in love despite the time differences. Il Mare itself, means the sea in Italian, is the name of a house near the sea with a mailbox in front of it, in which the story begins.  

I can relate why some people find this movie is boring. Yet I still think this movie is tremendously beautiful, especially the scenes with Il mare, the house in it. When the house is surrounded by mist, I feel the loneliness oozed from the house. When the purple-magenta sky hover the house, I feel the warmth soared from the house instead of the cold of loneliness. Those scenes are beautiful, I might paint it someday.

And how lovely the letters are. The way they read the letters sound like they have been reading a bedtime story. It is comforting. I love to hear it (Counting my bias: I just love how Korean language sound in my ears).  

Eun-joo:
I thought love meant eternal bliss. We were tormented because love goes on, not because it goes away. 

Sung-hyun:  It’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. 

Anyway,  Korean in 90ties just love these kind of scene :D  (no, they love those kind of scene till now, dun, dun, dun)

Ok, back to Rumble Fish (What?!? Oh yeah I’m random just like that). Now, Rumble Fish is band no longer. It disbanded in 2010. Its vocalist stays under the Rumble Fish name though it is a one man show now.  I have yet to know Rumble Fish as a band. From what I read, it is always stated as a pop rock band. So I listen to several of their songs. And I’m kind of understood when some of their fans said they are gonna miss the old Rumble Fish and its pop rock song.

Yes, love me some J Rabbit...

제이레빗 J Rabbit just released this video on friendznet's Youtube channel on June 18, 2011. Yet another cover song, but gotta love this one. Happy Birthday to you 생일축하 previously was sung by 권진원 (Kwon Jin-won) and first released on 2004. This song is so sweet, I want to pinch someone's cheek. Too bad, I just know this song. Because couple days ago, I'd searched a new birthday song especially in Korean for my sister's birthday. Since I couldn't find it, I sang the usual Happy Birthday To You song translated to Korean by my self (hah) and sent it via voice message. With the microphone hating me as usual, my voice came up like 5 years old girl's voice.

The thing about cover song is I never like it more than the original version. The reason is simple, because I don't need another Michael Jackson, another Lady Gaga, or another Jang Kiha & The faces :D. So when the cover song ends up as good as the original version (for me), it means the new version's singer has scored. Long story short, you have to listen Happy Birthday to you 생일축하 original version and another  cover version sang by Kwon Jin-won together with 구혜선 Goo Hye-sun (Yes, that Jandi girl from Boys Over Flower). I think the original version is as merry as J Rabbit cover version for methinks J Rabbit tend to make song sound merrier than it suppose to be from the point the way they sing the song.

Still, it is uri beloved J Rabbit. And another lovely cover song, Stevie Wonder's Overjoyed on July 14, 2011.

Why you should or should not watch Royal Family?

There are just many explicit product advertisements in this drama. It makes me think Royal family is based on true story of Chaebol family in Korea. Yes watch this, if anti-heroine makes you think a drama writer is good playing psychedelic. No, if watching anti-heroine, makes you feel like to give someone a slap on the face, to see her fallout as the happiest thing on K drama la, la, la, land, and if you never get to see one, you just want to shut your TV or lappy off.

Character development. The reason behind why I like makjang drama is this kind of drama often offers good character development and complexity. Let’s see:

Kim In-sook (Yum Jung-ah), at first, is portrayed as an all tight-perfect kind-victimized heroine. Her character creeps me out. The perfect kinder she is, the scarier she is. It is because you can’t read her, but you can feel there’s a crack somewhere in her character since no body is perfect. But later, they try to make her character more sympathizing. Kim In-sook character starts to lose its grip on me. Getting some sympathy does her not. Turning to "half-baked" anti-heroine she does. If all the attempts to make her more sympathizing don't work, I just hope they give her straight up anti-heroine role with being full-villain like Jo Pil-yeon (Jung Bo-suk) in Giants, Mishil (Go Hyun-jung) in Queen of Seon Deok, or Chae Do-woo (Kim Kang-woo) in Story of A Man. Because she is the female lead, she can be like them? Oh well, at least she is success in making me realize there’s a lead female character that I hate more than a spineless clinging woman, a woman who acts spineless.

Han  Ji-hoon (Ji sung). This character develops to no where. Han Ji-hoon character is shadowed by Kim In-sook. When I become to dislike Kim In-sook at the later part of drama, I dislike him too. When I have no sympathy for Kim In-sook, I have no sympathy for him too (not even with all the puppy love). Even I don’t care if suddenly he disappears after some episodes. He's just too obvious (I blame this drama synopsis partially), ruining the mystery part that I expect from every makjang drama that I watch. Anything more, I can not say, except Ji Sung over-acts sometime. But he’s cute, and then here’s end of all reasoning.

Jo Hyun-jin (Cha Ye-ryun). I don’t know about her acting, but I like her character actually. Like Ji Sung, she is also easy on my eyes. I ship this pairing. I wish I can see more of them playing cute together. But, alas… She's no Park Shi-hoo's woman version.

Gong Soon-ho (Kim Young-ae). She is the ordinary evil mother in law and a good career woman that means a lousy mother. 

Uhm Ki-do (Jun Noh-min). This actor looks slightly like Uhm Tae-woong (Dr, Champ, Queen of Seon Deok) for me. If you ever watch Giant, his character is sort of Lee Sung-mo kind of character (the older brother of the 1st male lead) even it got the same minimum face expression. What Kim In-sook means for him is still a mystery for me till now.

Storyline

If you distaste birth secret so much, don’t watch this (WHAT ?!? It is like telling all k drama addicts to stop watching all drama in K drama la, la, la land. The rehab will be full). Like proper makjang drama, Royal Family has one, the lousy one. The revelation of it is just bleh, wasting "birth secret effect". If you like noona –dongsaeng romantic relationship, watch this.If you can not understand why a mother like affection can turn to lover affection, DON’T watch this. If you don't like Autumn Fairy Tale, Memories of Bali, Stairway to Heaven, Bad Guy ending, this drama is no for you. But for me, after almost half of the episodes, every time trio Kido-Jihoon-Insook on screen, with teeth gritting, hair pulling, yelling on screen, there's nothing that I want except wanting to see their fallout, no redemption whatsoever. So the ending is all about satisfaction for me. *evil laugh*

Its average rating is 9, 6% nationwide. It aired at the same time when K drama drought happened this year (thank K drama Gods it ends gracefully with May madness). It became the winner among three dramas (Royal Family, 49 Days!, Thorn Birds (Joo Sang-wook: woohoo)) air at Wednesday –Thursday time slot. It hit 10, 8% nationwide and 13, 9% Seoul at final episode. 

OST. Yes I won't leave you without any song to sing. I realize there's to type of how OST is played in drama. First, drama that plays its OSTs over and over again through out all the episode like they are the theme song of certain scenes. Second, drama that plays various OSTs from the 1st episode to the last episode, so some of OSTs might not get the chance to be played again in later episodes. Royal Family is the second. My favorite OST is Don't Cry by 간종욱 Gan Jong-wook. This song is played in few 1st episodes of Royal Family. Gan Jong-wook's voice is wonderful.

W & Whale - Break It Down [lyric, romanization, translation]

Rihanna much? Black squid leather cloth, fierce look, all the dance moves, and the way she is ‘playing’ with man. This is a MV for a song Break It Down taken from W & Whale’s, a K indie electronic rock band, latest EP album CIRCUSSSS.  2NE1, one of K pop girl group, also released a MV for their song I am The Best last month. One of 2NE1’s appeals is that they are breaking the ordinary rule of girl group in K poplandia for being fierce, leaving the bubblegum song, and giving less aegyo image. What interesting is that I think more or less both MVs share some similarities. See, K indie and K pop aren’t that much different :D They all offer music and try to make people listening to it.

Both MVs are trying hard to give “strong woman” impression. Maybe there’s some kind of agreement out there, which I don’t know, that states “strong woman” means a woman wearing black squid leather cloth, anything else won’t be accepted. It is nothing to do with personality, I guess. “Strong woman” means she can play drum. Sure yes :P. So no wonder “strong woman” means she likes to crush thing if she likes to, like tearing Teddy Bear up or breaking some glass to pieces. But it is no Korean if they leave all the cutesy behind. Whale can have her Teddy Bear, Bom can have her poodle.

 

It must be JUST ME, I always have problem with cigarette and gun in everything that aimed for commercial promotion, whether it is television commercial film (TV CF), music video (MV), or photo spread in magazine. So the last part of 2NE1’s MV in which Bom, CL, Dara and Minzzy (yesh, finally I can name all the member of one of K pop girl group) hold gun, ruins the whole MV for me. W & Whale cleverly have something to replace gun without lessening “strong woman” image. They have a drill. I’m ok with a drill =) But guess which MV that gets banned?

Sometime, I never get my self to understand the reason behind Korean authority’s ban for a song, MV, or drama episode. So do I this times on W & Whale’s Break it Down being banned. The reasons behind the ban can be vary from “club theme” song lyric, a motor rider without a helm, or some boys doing some graffiti. But they allow teenage boys ripe their cloths and act like trying to seduce a woman or fourteen years old girl with minimum dress dance a booty dance in MV. Yeah I “clearly” can see the connection. My country has done some jaw-dropping till head-bumming bans for artist, song, painting, movie, or book. Sure why can’t I understand?

Nell (넬) - Fisheye Lens & Moonlight Punch Romance [lyric, romanization, translation]

It has been more than a half of year now, since the first time I heard a song from Nell (넬).  Since then, I and my sister have been fan-girling over Nell. Fan-girling here means we replay Nell songs over and over again in our playlist. Oh yeah we are niiiiiice fan-girls just like that ^^. There was a long journey by the sea in our vacation time on which we had nothing to do but listen to Nell & BigBang song compilation. Like poison and its anti dote that what Nell and Big Bang song are. Seriously, Nell is good in making sorrowful & gloomy song. Ones that are I don’t feel like to listen to it while I’m in my happy state. No matter how much I like Nell.

Nell formed in 1999. They have released: Reflection of Nell on January 2001, Speechless on September 2001, Let It Rain on 2003, Walk through Me on 2004, Healing Process on 2006, Let’s Take a Walk on 2007, Separation Anxiety on March 2008, 멀어지다 on June 2008 (well all the song in this album are same with ones in Separation Anxiety album plus one song  1분만 닥쳐줄래요), The Trace on November 2008 (this is a mini album). They are one of must know band for anyone who want to say ‘I’ve been following K indie music’. Let me put it like this, they are like My Name is Kim Sam Soon, Coffee Prince 1^st Coffee Shop, and ‘four season’ drama for K drama addict, like BigBang, Super Junior, and DBSK for K pop fan, or like Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Lady Gaga for anyone who say they ‘know’ American pop music (ok, maybe I’m exaggerating :D). Nell has succeeded marketablely and musically. Their songs had good positions in various music charts (Mnet, Bugs, Melon, Gaon). And they also won several music awards (Korean Music award, Golden Disk Award). They are something that can not be called ‘underated’ in K indie land or K music world.

I have listened to Healing Process, Let’s Take a Walk, Separation Anxiety, some songs from The Trace and Walk through Me. Their music is dark. They bring sorrow, loneliness & desperation alive. You just can sense it in the melody. And understanding the lyrics means adding some more darkness in their music. Their song lyrics are deep and meaningful (and sad). Nell is perfect for people who require a good lyric is a must for a good song. And that means big lost for anyone who don’t understand Korean pretty well (High five! J ). They go lighter in Separation Anxiety album. When I say lighter, it doesn’t mean it isn’t dark (so grey then? :( ). But it offers more up-beat tempo and “popish” songs. Maybe because my taste of music is inclined to pop, no wonder Separation Anxiety album becomes my favorite Nell’s album. I can’t stand listening Nell’s old albums when I’m happy or when I’m alone and on the verge of depression. And gosh you should read YesAsia description about this album:

Touche, it gives me some chill and got me thinking: What is the person who wrote this description going to say about Nell's previous albums.

And some Nell fans were gusting when they found out Separation Anxiety album tends to go more pop. Or when they switch their record label to one that called ‘major’ label, they are upset too.  And other people from k indie fans also had comment that Nell played safe by choosing sad ballad slow rock song for their title song. What’s wrong with going more pop and offering something that more appealing to the public? Is pop genre cheaper and less artistic? Where do you get that from? Major label means more promotion. With going more pop, they challenge them self with new music genre (honestly, I think Healing Process & Let’s Take a Walk album tend to be monotonic which is good in keeping the mood focus but it also can be read as boring). And they are at best in their sad ballad slow rock song. For everyone who says Nell is better when they sound more like Radiohead:  Uh oh to be more like their western counterpart doesn’t always mean better. Nell is better when they sound like Nell.              

My most favorite track from Separation Anxiety are track 3 기억을 걷는 시간 (it is sad T.T). And others are track 2 Moonlight Punch Romance and track 7 Fisheye Lens. These two songs are more up beat rock song, but the lyric are deep & meaningful and…. Sad.  I tried to translate the lyrics but please considerate something must be lost in translation. If I were one in Nell’s CD publisher company, I would give the English version of the lyrics that have been through Kim Jong-hwan’s approval inside CD package, it adds the value.
