It seems that Daum music has wrapped its project, 'Tribute90' series. Like I wrote before here, the project's premise is to bring back Korean 90's music with new perspective by working together with five indie record labels. It started off with S.E.S' Just A Feeling Cover, done by Urban Zakapa on the middle of August, and had released regularly a cover single and a live video in each every week since.
What I like about this kind of project is that it really helps introducing Korean music scene from an era before I know it myself, so then gives me better understanding about Korean music like it is now. Comment like Korean music is all about crappy, generic, un artistic song from boy band consisted effeminate boys acting like gay (like gay is something to be afraid and brush off >:/) and sugar-coated girl band wearing short shorts whose videos mostly being watched by middle age men, all comments that only brought me to think: Are you really know K music? Have you looked deeper to make such a comment? Don't you even know there's something more if you want to look just a little bit closer? It is not like I know it better than anyone else know it, I'm not Korean, not acting like one or trying to be one. And most of all it is not about praising one culture and talking bad the other, me is still me. There's not a thing without flaws. It is about learning new culture together and loving more than one thing. I'm speaking about giving more love. Is there something wrong with it?
So here I am, since I couldn't follow and also write about this project every single week, giving you the recap instead. So there are eight cover singles have been released for eight weeks. Here is the list:
1. Just A Feeling from S.E.S covered by Urban Zakapa [Record label: Fluxus]
2. 넌 남이 아냐 from E.O.S covered by The Koxx [Record label: HappyRobot Record]
3. 촌생연분 from Solid covered by Casker (캐스커) [Record label: Pastel Music]
4. To Heaven from Jo Seong-mo (조성모) covered by Super Kidd (슈퍼기드) [Record label: Soundholic Ent.]
5. 바보버스 from Pipi Long Stocking (삐삐롱스타킹) covered by Bye Bye Sea (안녕바다) [Record label: Fluxus]
6. 쿵따리 샤바라 from Clon (클론) covered by Serengeti (사렝게티) [Record label: Master Plan Production]
7. 달패이 from Panic covered by W&Whale [Record label: Fluxus]
8. 이별 의 그날 from Yoonsang (윤상) covered by Ashgray [record label: Soundholic Ent.] feat Baek Sae-eun (백새은)
My favorites are Urban Zakapa (of course J), W&Whale, and Ashgray. I'm not telling the rests are not good but rather not suit my taste. But if you like some rock in your music, you can try The Koxx and Bye Bye Sea. And Serengeti is for one who likes ska music. Casker is worth to listen for electro pop lover. Casker turns Solid ’s 촌생연분, a 90’s dance pop song with not to forget “unique” Korean rap style (I don’t know why even right now K pop world’s inhabitants insist to have a rap part in almost every dance pop song ever, even if they only have an arguable rap skill) into “today” electro pop song . Is it just me or Super Kidd makes tribute to 90’s music going retro to 80’s music?
And if you like to add some ballad into your rock music, Ashgray won't fail you. Gosh I'm sucker for dramatic-lover-separation-themed-slow-rock song. It goes to my ears straight into my heart. It is like calling out my melodramatic K drama fan sideJ. I have to say I love, love, love the Ashgray's version way much than the original version, simply because it is more dramatic. Ashgray is good in dramatic slow rock song like usual.

[Lyric, Romanization, Translation]
Mundeuk dorabomyeon gatheun jarijiman
Suddenly looking back to that same place, but..
Nan aju meon gireul tteonandeut haesseo
It seems that I had left a long way
Mannal sun eopseoji hambeon eogeutnan hu
For the time I couldn’t meet you, once I departed
Nae kieok sogeseoman saraineun meon geudae
Only in my memory, you live forever
Nan kkeutnae iksukhaejigetji
I will get used to it at the end
Geujeo swipge itgo saneun geol
It is just a thing that easily to forget and live with it
Tto hamkke nanun modeun geotdo
And always be with me everywhere
Geumankheume heojeonham il ppun
Nothing but part of growing emptiness
Deo eopsi heulleoganeun sigan sogeseo
In time that fly fleetingly
Eotteon mannameul junbihalkka
No meeting to look for
Hajiman kieokhaejwo jinan yaegiwa
But please remember this painful story and
Ibyeol hue biroso nun tteun nae sarangeul
Only until after the separation, I realize my love
At first I was quite sure I like W&Whale's달팽이cover version more than Panic's original version. But then I thought about it again, what if it was because I listen to Panic's 달팽이 MV meaning studio version? So I tried to search Panic's live version. And I stick to my decision. It is not quite the ordinary, I love acoustic sound, but I have to give W&Whale prop in using keyboard instead of classic piano and electric guitar replacing the saxophone sound like in Panic's 달팽이 live performance. I think it made W&Whale live performance more… livelily than Panic's version? And I like watching singer's face expression while she/he sings so that sunglass doesn’t help. Yesh check out this Panic's 달팽이 live performance. Be ware of hair distraction :P
Anyway I love the MV, that's what the song all about. Ahh deep meaning song just the way I like it. Check the meaning of song here.
[Lyric & Romanization]
Jibe oneun gireun ttaeron neomu gireo
Modu itge modu itge haejul badareul geoneolgeoya
Daum for the info
